A hoodie hides the neckline. A crewneck sweatshirt has nowhere to hide, which is exactly why the collar, the fabric weight, and the print behind it matter more here than on almost anything else in a heavyweight wardrobe. We build four of them right now, at three different fabric weights and in two different constructions, and the honest answer to "which one" depends on specifics most brands never publish. Here they all are, side by side.
What actually makes something a crewneck sweatshirt
The neckline does the defining. A crewneck sweatshirt is a pullover with a round, ribbed collar and no hood, no drawstring, and usually no front pocket. That is the whole definition, but it carries real construction consequences. Without a hood to add bulk at the shoulders, the collar, the shoulder seam, and the cuffs are the only places a crewneck can show its construction quality, which is why the pieces below all lean on ribbing at the collar, cuffs, and hem rather than anywhere else. We cover the mechanics of that ribbing in more depth in our piece on ribbed collars and double stitching.
The fabric weight question: 320, 350, or 360 GSM
Every crewneck sweatshirt we make sits at a different fabric weight, and the number changes how the piece behaves, not just how it feels off the shelf. For the full explanation of what GSM measures and why it matters, see our GSM explainer. The short version for this category:
- 320 GSM, 100% cotton. The lightest of the four, used on Metamorphosis, our boxy short-sleeve piece. It sits in the gap between a heavyweight tee and a full sweatshirt: substantial enough to hold its shape, light enough to wear through a warm evening.
- 350 GSM, 85% cotton / 15% polyester fleece. Used on both Spirit Molecule and Mycelial Network. The small polyester share is what makes a fleece interior possible without the fabric going limp the way most 250 to 280 GSM mass-market fleece does after a season. It holds the shoulder line of an oversized drop-shoulder cut instead of collapsing off it.
- 360 GSM, 100% cotton, no blend. Used on Life's a Beach, our heaviest crewneck. No polyester means the vintage wash bites directly into the fiber instead of sitting on top of a synthetic, and the knit is textured rather than smooth so it catches light across the body.
None of these are the thin 250 GSM crewneck fleece you find at mass retailers. The lightest one we sell is still heavier than what most stores call "heavyweight."
Two constructions: oversized drop shoulder and boxy short sleeve
Three of the four pieces here share an oversized, dropped-shoulder cut: the shoulder seam sits below your actual shoulder, which is what gives the sleeve its relaxed break and the body its extra width. The fourth, Metamorphosis, is a different build entirely: a boxy, short-length body with raglan short sleeves instead of a dropped shoulder, closer to an elevated heavyweight tee than a true sweatshirt. We go deeper on how these silhouettes differ, and how to wear each one without it reading sloppy, in boxy vs oversized vs drop shoulder.
The art behind each back print
The front of every graphic crewneck sweatshirt we make stays deliberately quiet: one small flame mark at the left chest, nothing else. The story is on the back, and it is different on every piece.
Spirit Molecule
A single white line drawing running nearly the full length of the back. A seated figure rests inside a geometric portal at the top, ringed by concentric circles and a woven lattice, with a column of open eyes rising from where its head should be. The composition breaks open below into a fanged skull and a knot of snake skeletons that coil down through a field of stars before tapering to a point. Drawn entirely in white line work, so it reads as a single dark crest from across a room and as dozens of small details up close. Original and exclusive to Phantasmagorical, printed at 40 by 52 centimeters. 350 GSM fleece, oversized drop shoulder, $95.
Mycelial Network
The same white line technique built around a single vast mushroom at the center of the back, its cap opened into a geometric rosette crowned with crystal shards and a crescent moon. The stipe opens into a doorway onto a night sky, and beneath it the whole drawing dissolves into a root system threaded with smaller mushrooms and drifting orbs. The root system takes up as much of the drawing as the mushroom itself, which is the point: the network below is the part that actually matters. 350 GSM fleece, oversized drop shoulder, $80.
Life's a Beach
A full-color print instead of white line work: an entire beach scene inside a goldfish bowl, with a mushroom the size of a parasol shading a sunbather, a flying saucer over the water, and a flame-wrapped van parked on the sand. A pyramid with one open eye floats above the rim, its rainbow tongue trailing down into the water. Printed at 40 by 52 centimeters on our heaviest crewneck fabric, 360 GSM pure cotton, relaxed drop shoulder, $95.
Metamorphosis
The one piece here without a large back print. Metamorphosis is built around construction and wash rather than artwork: a true vintage wash on 320 GSM heavyweight cotton, a boxy short-length body with raglan short sleeves, a ribbed collar and hem, and a rolled raw-edge detail at the hem. It is the entry point into this category, both in price and in fabric weight, for anyone who wants the heavyweight feel without committing to a full oversized crewneck. $70.

Sizing
All four run true to their intended silhouette rather than small or large, so the sizing question is really a fit question: how oversized do you want it. Our founder Russell is 6'2" and 180 lbs. He wears L in the Spirit Molecule and Mycelial Network crewnecks for the intended oversized drape, L in Life's a Beach, and XL in Metamorphosis for the boxy silhouette shown on the product photos. Sizing down one on any of the four gets you closer to a regular fit while keeping the dropped shoulder or raglan sleeve. Use the size recommender on each product page to lock in your fit; it unlocks our 30-Day Sizing Guarantee with free exchanges.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a crewneck sweatshirt and a hoodie?
Construction. A crewneck has a round, ribbed collar and no hood or drawstring, which puts more visual weight on the collar, shoulder seam, and print. A hoodie adds a hood and usually a front pocket, which changes how the fabric drapes at the neck and chest. We carry both in the same collection if you want to compare them side by side.
Is 350 or 360 GSM actually heavy for a sweatshirt?
Yes. Mass-market fleece crewnecks generally sit around 250 to 280 GSM, and anything at or above roughly 320 GSM is genuinely heavyweight. At 350 and 360 GSM, the pieces here sit well past that line, which is why they hold their shape and shoulder line instead of going limp after a season.
Should I pick the cotton-poly fleece or the 100% cotton crewneck?
The fleece (Spirit Molecule, Mycelial Network) gives you a brushed interior and a slightly softer hand at 350 GSM. The 100% cotton crewneck (Life's a Beach) is heavier at 360 GSM with a textured, non-fleece knit, and the vintage wash bites into the fiber more directly since there is no polyester in the blend. Neither is objectively better; they are different fabrics for a similar silhouette.
Does the graphic show from the front?
Barely. All three graphic crewnecks keep the front to a single small flame mark at the left chest. The full artwork is on the back, so the piece reads quiet walking toward you and unmistakable walking away.
How do I care for these?
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, no bleach, tumble dry low, and iron on low while avoiding the print directly. High heat is what shrinks heavyweight cotton and cotton-poly fleece, so skip the hot dryer on all four of these.
All four crewnecks live in our Hoodies & Sweatshirts collection alongside our full hoodie range, if you want to compare fabric weights and washes across the whole heavier-layer lineup in one place.
