What Is GSM in Fabric? The Fabric Weight Number That Explains Everything

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is the weight of one square meter of fabric, and it is the single most honest number on a garment spec sheet. Price can be marked up. Marketing copy can say anything. GSM is just mass per area, and it tells you before you ever touch a shirt whether it will feel substantial or flimsy, drape or cling, hold a print or warp around it.

If you have ever ordered a "premium" tee online and received something you could read a newspaper through, GSM is the number that would have warned you. This guide explains what GSM means in fabric, how it is measured, what the ranges actually feel like in hand, and why we build everything we make at the heavy end of the scale.

What is GSM in textiles, exactly?

In textiles, GSM (sometimes written as g/m²) measures fabric density: how many grams a single square meter of that cloth weighs. It is the metric standard used by mills, dye houses, and garment manufacturers worldwide. The imperial cousin is ounces per square yard, which you will see on denim and some American workwear; multiply ounces by roughly 33.9 to convert to GSM.

The measurement itself is refreshingly low-tech. A mill cuts a precise swatch with a circular sample cutter, puts it on a calibrated scale, and scales the result up to a full square meter. No interpretation, no grading curve. That is why garment people trust it: when someone asks what GSM means in cloth terms, the answer is simply "how much fabric is actually there."

Two things GSM does not tell you: fiber content and construction. A 220 GSM polyester blend and a 220 GSM ringspun cotton weigh the same and feel completely different. So GSM is the starting point of a quality conversation, not the whole conversation. But it is the right starting point, because no other single number carries as much information about how a garment will wear, wash, and age.

The GSM scale for T-shirts, from tissue to armor

Here is the working scale for T-shirt fabric, with what each range actually means in hand:

  • Under 140 GSM: lightweight. Promotional tees, undershirts, fast fashion basics. Semi-transparent on the body, collapses after a few washes. This is the weight most people are used to, which is why heavier fabric surprises them.
  • 140 to 180 GSM: standard. The bulk of mall retail lives here. Wearable, forgettable, and prone to twisting off-grain after repeated laundering.
  • 180 to 220 GSM: midweight. Where "premium basics" brands start. Noticeably more opaque, holds its shape better, still light enough for layering.
  • 220 to 250 GSM: heavyweight. The fabric announces itself. Boxy silhouettes become possible because the cloth has enough body to stand away from the torso instead of draping onto it. Screen prints sit flat and crack less because the substrate is stable.
  • 250 GSM and up: true heavyweight territory. Structure, opacity, and a distinct broken-in weight that reads as vintage from across a room. Above 300 GSM you are into specialty knits; above 400 GSM you are mostly talking fleece pieces like hoodies and sweatpants rather than tees.

So what is a heavyweight T-shirt?

A heavyweight T-shirt is generally anything at 220 GSM or above, though purists set the bar at 240. The difference is not just durability, it is architecture. Heavy fabric holds a boxy, drop-shoulder cut the way light fabric physically cannot: the cloth has enough self-weight to hang in a clean line instead of following every contour underneath it. That is why the fits you see on vintage 90s tees are inseparable from the fabric weights of that era.

Weight also changes how a shirt ages. Light fabric wears out; heavy fabric wears in. Why we build at 250 to 420 GSM

Every piece we make starts from original hand-drawn artwork, and heavy fabric is what protects that art. A print is only as stable as the cloth under it. On thin jersey, a large graphic stiffens the front panel and makes the shirt hang crooked; on a 250 GSM blank, the fabric outweighs the ink and the print becomes part of the garment instead of a sticker on top of it.

Heavier fabric costs more to knit, more to dye, more to wash, and more to ship. There is no way around that math, which is exactly why most brands quietly stay under 180 GSM and let the marketing department handle the word "premium." GSM for T-shirts: quick answers

What is a good GSM for a T-shirt?

Depends on the job. For an undershirt or hot-climate layering, 140 to 180 GSM is fine. For a standalone tee that holds a structured fit, prints cleanly, and survives years of washing, look for 220 GSM minimum, with 250 GSM as the sweet spot between substance and comfort.

Is a higher GSM always better?

No. GSM measures quantity of fabric, not quality of fiber or knit. A well-made 200 GSM tee from good ringspun cotton beats a coarse 300 GSM tee from open-end yarn. Weight plus quality is the combination worth paying for.

What GSM are hoodies and sweatpants?

Fleece runs heavier than jersey. Standard hoodies sit around 280 to 350 GSM; heavyweight fleece runs 400 GSM and beyond. Our heaviest pieces run at 420 GSM, which is the difference between a hoodie you wear and a hoodie you live in.

Does GSM affect shrinkage?

Indirectly. Heavier knits are usually denser and more dimensionally stable, and garment-washed heavy fabric has already been through the shock of hot water and agitation before you ever wear it, so most of the shrinkage is spent at the factory. A thin, loosely knit tee has the most room to shrink and twist.

How can I check GSM at home?

Without a sample cutter, use the postal scale method: weigh the whole shirt in grams, then compare against a known reference. A size L tee at 140 GSM weighs roughly 150 grams; the same size at 250 GSM comes in well over 250 grams. If a brand will not publish its GSM at all, that silence is usually the answer.
