Graphic Tank Tops, Explained: Heavyweight GSM, Every Cut We Make, and the Art on Each

A graphic tank top is usually the thinnest thing in a drawer: a 120 to 150 GSM knit that loses its shape in a season. Ours start where most full t-shirts stop. Every tank below is made to order in 270 to 370 GSM fabric and carries artwork original to Phantasmagorical, not a stock graphic. This guide lays out the weight, the fiber, the cut, and the art on each one, with the real shoulder measurement from each product page so you can pick a size without guessing.

A note on neutrality: these are our tanks, and this is not a roundup of other brands. What we can give you is every spec we publish, side by side, and an honest read on which cut suits which build.

What makes a heavyweight tank top heavyweight

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter, or GSM. Our GSM explainer covers the number in full. For a tank, the short version is this: a standard tank weighs 120 to 150 GSM, and at that weight the fabric clings and loses its shape fast. Our raw hem, frayed hem, grommet, and hooded tanks run 270 to 275 GSM, nearly double. The French terry tank runs 340 GSM and the sleeveless hoodie runs 370 GSM.

Weight changes what you see in the mirror. The body has real drape and hangs straight instead of clinging when you sweat, it holds its shape wash after wash, and the snow wash reads as vintage character from the first wear. The sleeveless cut keeps a heavyweight tank breathable, so the extra weight does not mean extra heat.

The raw hem and frayed hem tanks: same fabric, different shoulder

Two of our designs, Dimensional Drift and Inner Alchemy, are each made in two cuts. Both cuts use the same 275 GSM snow wash cotton. The chest is within half an inch at L, XL, and 2XL. The shoulder is where they split, and the shoulder decides how the tank wears.

The Raw Hem cut is a true drop shoulder. The shoulder seam measures 23.2 inches at M and 24.0 inches at L, so it falls down the upper arm and gives a boxy, oversized outline. The hems are cut and left unfinished. The chest also runs about one full size wide against the rest of our line, so a Raw Hem S measures like a standard M. Sizes S to 2XL, $60.

The Frayed Hem cut uses a set-in shoulder at 17.3 inches at M and 18.1 inches at L, almost 6 inches narrower. The seam sits at your natural shoulder point, so it reads structured and moderately relaxed. The armholes are hand frayed, which is intentional finishing that softens with each wash. Sizes M to 2XL, $60.

If you are still deciding between silhouettes in general, our boxy vs oversized vs drop shoulder guide explains what each cut does on the frame.

Dimensional Drift

The artwork is a gold wireframe human figure suspended by fine lines from a hovering all-seeing eye set inside planetary orbits, with a crescent moon, a sun, and scattered stars joined by thin geometric linework above. It is original and exclusive to Phantasmagorical. Available as the Dimensional Drift Raw Hem Tank in Black, or the Dimensional Drift Frayed Hem Tank.

Inner Alchemy

A radiant sun with a calm human face crowns the design. Below it, a pair of wings spreads from a geometric triangle, and a serpent coils around a central staff in the style of a caduceus, with a single watchful eye at the base. Also original and exclusive. Available as the Inner Alchemy Raw Hem Tank in Black, or the Inner Alchemy Frayed Hem Tank.

The Spirit Molecule tanks: two capped releases

The Spirit Molecule line is where we push construction furthest, and both tanks in it are limited. Neither will be restocked once the run is done.

The Spirit Molecule French Terry Boxy Tank is built from 340 GSM French terry, 87% cotton and 13% polyester, with hand-cut raw sleeves and a high, snug collar that holds its shape. French terry has a looped back, so the tank has more body and a heavier drape than a lightweight jersey. It is cut boxy and short: 25.0 inches of chest and 24.6 inches of length at L. This is the one tank in the lineup where the product page says to size up one. Black or Gray, S to 2XL, $65.

The Spirit Molecule Grommet Eyelet Tank is 270 GSM 100% cotton with custom grommet eyelet hardware and an artisan-dyed, hand-sprayed finish. It has the widest chest in the lineup, 26.4 inches at L, with 28.0 inches of length, for a loose, relaxed hang. Order true to size. Gray, S to 2XL, $70.

Both carry the custom Spirit Molecule serpent artwork. The rest of the line, including tees and joggers, lives in the Spirit Molecule collection.

Hooded tanks and the sleeveless hoodie

A hood changes what a tank is for. It turns a warm-weather piece into a layer you can wear over a long sleeve or under an open jacket as the weather cools.

The boxy hooded tanks are 270 GSM, 87% cotton and 13% polyester, with a snow wash and a boxy, oversized, cropped cut. The oversized hood sits like a cowl when it is down. They run true to size; size down one for a trimmer look. Black, S to 2XL, $80. Two of them carry designs with real depth:

  • The Mystic Myco Boxy Hooded Tank carries a full back panel about the duality of mushrooms, life and decay in one organism: a skull on one side, a woman's face on the other, a meditating figure between them, mushrooms rising from the edges, a death's-head moth, and an all-seeing eye beneath the sun and moon. The chest keeps it quiet with a single mushroom framed in sacred geometry.
  • The Mycelial Network Boxy Hooded Tank is a tribute to mycelium, the fine threads under a forest floor that link tree to tree and carry nutrients between them.

The Mystic Myco Sleeveless Hoodie is the heaviest piece in this guide at 370 GSM. It is a different fabric, so we will be plain about it: a knit of 54.7% polyester, 39.8% cotton, and 5.5% spandex, chosen for structure and stretch recovery. It has a vintage wash with a sun fade, a loose H-line body, seamless dropped shoulders, a drawstring hood through metal eyelets, a stitched patch pocket, and a ribbed hem that keeps the shape from flaring. 24.4 inches of chest, 26.8 inches of length, and 22.4 inches of shoulder at L. True to size. $95.

Men's graphic tank tops: size by the shoulder number

With a sleeved tee, chest width does most of the work. With a tank, the shoulder measurement matters as much, because there is no sleeve to hide where the seam lands. On a men's graphic tank top, that seam decides whether you look deliberate or swallowed.

  • Want the seam at your natural shoulder and a structured line? Choose a Frayed Hem cut, about 18 inches of shoulder at L. Order your usual size.
  • Want a wide, boxy outline with the seam down the arm? Choose a Raw Hem cut, about 24 inches of shoulder at L. Because the chest also runs a full size wide, order your usual size for the full drape or size down one for a closer fit.
  • Want the shortest, densest box? The 340 GSM French terry tank, 24.6 inches long at L. Size up one, as its page recommends.
  • Want the most room through the chest? The grommet tank, 26.4 inches of chest at L, true to size.

For a live reference, Russell, our founder, is 6 feet 2 inches and 180 pounds. Per each product page, he wears L in the Dimensional Drift Raw Hem for a closer cut or XL for the full drape, L in the Inner Alchemy Frayed Hem, XL in the Dimensional Drift Frayed Hem for a relaxed fit, XL in the French terry tank, and L or XL in the hooded tanks and the grommet tank depending on how much slouch he wants.

The simplest method: lay a tank or tee you like flat, measure seam to seam across the back of the shoulders, and match that number to the chart on the product page. If the fit still lands wrong, use the size recommender on the product page before you order. It unlocks our 30-Day Sizing Guarantee with free exchanges, which matters because every piece is made to order.

We also cut two women's tanks, Dimensional Drift Femme and Dissolution of Ego Femme, both women's-cut tanks in 275 GSM with a snow wash, at $50. They are in the Women's collection.

Wearing a tank past summer

A heavyweight tank earns its place in the cooler months as a layer. Over a long sleeve, a 275 GSM body keeps a clean line instead of bunching. Under an open overshirt or jacket, the graphic stays visible. The hooded tanks and the sleeveless hoodie were built for exactly that swing in temperature, and the drop shoulder cuts layer more easily than the set-in cuts because there is room at the arm.

Care: keep the wash and the print

Follow the care line on each product page. The care lines published for these tanks call for a cold machine wash and a low tumble dry, and the Dimensional Drift Frayed Hem page adds a gentle cycle and a low iron that stays off the print. Cold water helps the wash keep its character. Our snow wash care guide covers the details, and the raw and hand-frayed edges will soften and fray a little more with each wash, which is the point of the finish.

Why the art is the reason to buy one

Any factory can print a stock graphic on a blank. Every design in this guide is original to Phantasmagorical, and several of them, like Mystic Myco, carry a full story across the front and back panels. If you want to check any brand's claim of original artwork, including ours, our guide on how to tell if clothing artwork is actually original walks through the checks. Several of these designs also appear on our tees, which are covered in our oversized graphic tees guide, and the brand as a whole is covered in our psychedelic streetwear guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is 275 GSM too heavy for a tank top?

No. The sleeveless cut keeps a heavyweight tank breathable. You get the drape and structure of heavy cotton without the heat of a full sleeve.

Raw Hem or Frayed Hem: which should I buy?

Decide by the shoulder. The Raw Hem is a drop shoulder at about 24 inches at L and wears boxy and oversized. The Frayed Hem is a set-in shoulder at about 18 inches at L and wears structured. The fabric, weight, wash, and artwork are the same.

Is the fraying on the armholes a defect?

No. The hand-frayed armholes and raw hems are intentional finishing. The fabric is fully intact, and the edges develop more character with each wash.

Are these graphic tank tops made in limited runs?

Every piece is made to order. The two Spirit Molecule tanks are capped releases that will not be restocked once the run ends.

What is the heaviest tank you make?

The Mystic Myco Sleeveless Hoodie at 370 GSM, followed by the Spirit Molecule French Terry Boxy Tank at 340 GSM. The rest of the lineup runs 270 to 275 GSM.

A heavyweight tank is a small garment with a lot of decisions in it: weight, fiber, shoulder, hem, and art. Read the shoulder number, pick the design you want to live with, and browse the full Heavyweight Tank Tops collection.
