What actually separates one hoodie wash from another
Four things decide whether a wash is worth paying for: the process itself (what happens to the fabric and why no two pieces match), the fabric weight (a number when we have one, "heavyweight" when we do not), the construction around the wash (hand-frayed edges, raw hems, a clean finish), and the artwork carried on top of it. Snow wash: the standard, and the one we hand-fray most
Snow wash tumbles the finished garment with pumice stones and a small amount of bleaching agent. The stones make contact at random points, so color lifts unevenly and leaves the cloudy, frosted pattern the finish is named for. It is also the wash we pair most often with hand-fraying, where every edge and hem is frayed by a person rather than a machine or a laser, which is why no two hand-frayed pieces come out identical.

Mystic Signal Snow Washed Heavyweight Cotton Hoodie, $80
100% cotton, heavyweight, oversized. This is the clearest write-up we have of how the wash actually works on a garment: pumice stones and natural enzymes tumble the fabric to create the color variation and a soft texture from day one. The exception: Spirit Molecule Snow Wash Fleece Hoodie, $100
This one carries a snow wash finish but is built differently from the four above: 355 GSM premium fleece blend (53% polyester, 42% cotton, 5% other fibers) rather than 100% cotton, with a drop-shoulder oversized fit and a snake artwork tied to the Spirit Molecule line. It is run as an archival capsule release and will not be reproduced once it sells out, so treat the GSM figure and the fleece construction as specific to this piece, not the snow wash cotton hoodies above it. Mineral wash: heavier build, fewer pieces, more contrast in the seams
Mineral wash goes on after the garment is fully built, which is why the tone pools darker in the seams and creases and lifts lighter across the flat panels. It is a subtler, more atmospheric fade than snow wash rather than a louder one. Both of our mineral wash hoodies are built at 400 GSM in 100% cotton, well above the 280 to 340 GSM range most hoodies sold as heavyweight actually sit in, and both are cut boxy and oversized with a drop shoulder and a kangaroo pocket.

Sunfade replicates the gradient a garment gets from sitting in direct sunlight for months, lighter in some areas than others, without the even flatness of a dyed fade. Because the effect depends on how the piece sits during the process, every one comes out a little differently.

Why some of these list a GSM number and some just say "heavyweight"
Three of the eight carry a published GSM figure (the two mineral wash pieces at 400, the fleece piece at 355) because that number is on their own product page. The rest are described as heavyweight cotton without a stated figure, so this guide does not invent one for them. None of these run small, and most are cut oversized or boxy by design, so true-to-size ordering rarely means the same finished measurement twice.
