A long sleeve is harder to get right than a tee. A tee forgives you: there is less fabric hanging off the shoulder, so a middling weight still reads as fine. A long sleeve has sleeves, and sleeves are where thin cotton tells on itself. The cuff goes slack, the forearm collapses into wrinkles, and the whole thing starts to feel like a pajama top.
We make eight graphic long sleeve shirts right now, all of them acid wash, all of them with the full artwork across the back. We sell these, so read this with that in mind. Every spec below is copied from each shirt's own product page, and where a page does not state something, neither do we.
What to look for in graphic long sleeve shirts
Three things decide whether a graphic long sleeve is worth owning past its first season.
- Fabric weight. The sleeve has to hold a line from shoulder to cuff, and that is a fabric weight question. GSM is the number that answers it; our GSM explainer covers what the figure measures and how to read it on any label.
- Where the art sits. A long sleeve gives you three canvases: the chest, the back, and the sleeves. A back print gets the largest clean field on the shirt, which matters when the fabric under it is busy.
- Whether the art is original. A lot of graphic apparel is built on purchased stock files that turn up on many storefronts at once. We wrote a guide to checking that on any brand, ours included: How to Tell If Clothing Artwork Is Actually Original.
What an acid wash shirt actually is
Acid wash is a garment wash, which means it is applied after the shirt is sewn rather than to the yarn or the flat fabric. The classic method came out of 1980s denim: pumice stones are soaked in a strong lightening agent, traditionally chlorine bleach or potassium permanganate, and tumbled with the finished garment. Where a stone makes contact, color lifts. The result is high contrast marbling, pale veins with hard edges against a darker ground, rather than the soft cloud of a snow wash or the even fade of a vintage wash.
Because the finish goes on after the shirt is built, the fade breaks across the seams and runs down the sleeves, and it lands a little differently on every unit. Two of our long sleeves in the same colorway will not match each other exactly. The print is consistent; the wash under it is not. What you see in a product photo is the pattern language, not your exact piece.
The process detail on each finish we work with, side by side, is in Snow Wash vs Acid Wash vs Vintage Wash.
Why 250 GSM is the right weight for a long sleeve
All eight are 250 GSM, 100% cotton, which is 7.4 oz per square yard. Most long sleeve tees sold at retail sit around 150 to 180 GSM and go thin at the elbow inside a season. The extra yarn at 250 is what lets the body hang instead of cling, and it gives the print a stable surface rather than a stretched one.
It is a layering weight, not a sweatshirt weight. At 250 GSM the shirt holds its shape and stands on its own in fall and spring, and it still sits under a hoodie without bunching. If you are building that layer, our graphic hoodies guide covers the heavier builds that go over it, and our 250 GSM guide shows where this weight sits against the rest of the market.
How they fit: oversized, drop shoulder, S to 2XL
Every one of the eight is cut oversized with a drop shoulder, so the sleeve seam sits down the arm and the shoulder line reads wide. Ribbed round neck, straight hem, long enough to wear out over the waist. For reference, Russell, our founder, is 6'2" and 180 lbs and wears an XL in this cut. Order your normal size for the look in the photos, or size down one if you want it closer.
The chart below is the garment laid flat, in inches, copied from the product pages; all eight share it. Chest is given two ways: flat is straight across, and round is that number doubled, which is the full circumference and the figure that matches a chest measurement you take on yourself. The easiest way to use it: lay a long sleeve you already like flat, measure across the chest, double it, and match it to the round column.
| Size | Chest flat / round | Length | Shoulder | Sleeve |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 22.4 / 44.9 | 28.4 | 22.8 | 24.0 |
| M | 23.2 / 46.5 | 29.1 | 23.4 | 24.4 |
| L | 24.0 / 48.0 | 29.9 | 24.0 | 24.8 |
| XL | 24.8 / 49.6 | 30.7 | 24.6 | 25.2 |
| 2XL | 25.6 / 51.2 | 31.5 | 25.2 | 25.6 |
Pick your size from the chart and it is backed by our 30 Day Sizing Guarantee with free exchanges. The fit vocabulary is broken down in Boxy vs Oversized vs Drop Shoulder, and the same flat-versus-round method is walked through for our tees in our boxy fit sizing guide.
The art on each back
All eight carry the full artwork across the back and the Phantasmagorical logo on the left chest. The back placement is deliberate: an acid wash front is already visually busy, and the back gives each drawing the biggest clean field on the shirt. Several are drawn in line alone with no fills, so the marbling reads straight through the art instead of sitting behind it; others are built in fine stipple work so they hold depth against a washed ground. Seven are original artwork drawn for Phantasmagorical, and the eighth comes from our collaboration with Patakota.
- Existential. A dragonfly opens its wings inside a triangle drawn in single weight line. Below it a Flower of Life circle is built out point by point, and under that an eye sits inside a ring with moon phases stepping around the edge. Line only, no fills.
- Dimensional Drift. A saucer with a single open eye at its core throws a beam of fine parallel lines onto a wireframe figure floating mid air, arched backward, with a sun, a crescent moon and a scatter of stars on thin orbit lines. Warm cream line work, no fills.
- Embrace The Chaos. A knot of serpents passing over and under each other with no clear beginning and no end, open eyes scattered through the tangle, drawn entirely in single weight white line. From our collaboration with Patakota.
- Spirit Animal. A pack of leopards tumbles through a field of stars and planets, several caught mid snarl. The spots and fur are built in fine stipple work rather than solid shapes, with PHANTASMAGORICAL set behind them in large outlined letters.
- Oracle. A totem of faces stacked one above another and crowned at the top, each rendered in dense fine line and framed by ornament that spreads to the edges of the print, symmetrical down the center line.
- Mystic Myco. A tall tarot style panel in fine white line: constellations and a faceted crystal at the top, a mandala built ring by ring through the middle with moon phases down both sides, and branching roots at the base. It is the same panel that runs on the back of our other Mystic Myco pieces.
- Ouroboros Gate. A serpent coils up through a ring and back on itself, fangs out, its body scaled in fine stipple that catches the wash underneath. Single weight white line, no fills, and new to this drop.
- PsySquatch. A sasquatch walks out of the print in profile, mid stride, with a Flower of Life ring behind its head. Teal filaments of mycelium run down its arm and mushrooms push up through rust orange roots where it steps, all in stipple work so the fur holds depth on a washed ground.
The artwork story across the rest of our line is in Oversized Graphic Tees, Explained: The Original Art and Construction Behind Every Print, and the brand as a whole is laid out in our guide to psychedelic streetwear.
If you want length without the wash
The PsySquatch Tree Camo Waffle Knit Long Sleeve goes the other direction. It is 260 GSM in a 65% cotton and 35% polyester waffle knit, printed edge to edge in a winter tree camo with the PsySquatch figure across the back, so the texture and the all over print do the work the wash does on the other eight. It is also a much wider blank: even the S measures 48 inches round through the chest, against 44.9 inches on the acid wash S. One colorway, S to 2XL, $75.
How to keep the wash
What you are protecting on an acid wash is the contrast, and heat is what dulls a garment wash and cracks a print. The care line on all eight reads the same: machine wash cold on gentle, no bleach, tumble dry low, iron low and keep the iron off the print, do not dry clean. Turn it inside out before it goes in. Our care guide for washed tees and our heavyweight washing guide cover the rest.
Made to order, and no two alike
Every piece is made to order, and the wash lands differently on every unit, so the marbling on yours is yours. We are not going to dress that up as a countdown. Several of these drawings already run on other garments in our line; the exact pattern on your shirt will not be matched by any other piece. All eight are $75, and they sit alongside the waffle knit in our Long Sleeve T-Shirts collection.
Frequently asked questions
Is there acid in an acid wash shirt?
Not in the classic process. The name dates to 1980s denim, and the traditional method tumbles the garment with pumice stones soaked in a strong lightening agent such as chlorine bleach or potassium permanganate. What every one of our product pages states is that the acid wash is applied to the finished garment, after it is sewn.
How should mens long sleeve graphic shirts fit?
For an oversized drop shoulder cut like these, order your normal size for the look in the photos and size down one if you want it closer. Our founder is 6'2" and 180 lbs and wears an XL. Check the round chest column in the chart above against a long sleeve you already own.
Will my piece look exactly like the photos?
Close, not identical. The print is consistent; the wash pattern under it is different on every unit.
Is 250 GSM heavy for a long sleeve?
Yes. The common retail long sleeve runs 150 to 180 GSM. At 250 GSM this one holds its shape, layers under a hoodie without bunching, and stands on its own in fall and spring.
What sizes and colors are there?
Each design comes in three colorways across S to 2XL, fifteen size and color combinations per shirt.
